From Avignon : sample the prestigious wines of Gigondas and Chateauneuf du Pape, discover the extraordinary Roman sites in Arles & walk on the footsteps of the painter Vincent Van Gogh.
In Arles, walk through the city to discover the Roman heritage : the amphitheater, the Roman theater and the ancient sites still well preserved and painted by Van Gogh between 1888 and 1890 (La Maison Jaune, Le Cafe la Nuit, Le Jardin de l'Hôtel Dieu). Enjoy the market in Arles on Saturday morning.
Photo stop in Les Baux de Provence to admire the village from the Val d'Enfer panoramic view.
Enjoy the audiovisual show (ticket included) in the Carrières de Lumière : a multimedia exhibition of famous paintings are displayed on the walls of the quarry accompanied by music. Vincent Van Gogh will be the theme in 2019. The Carrières de Lumière are closed from January to beginning of March : more time will be allowed in the village of Les Baux during this period.
In Saint-Rémy de Provence, take a look at Saint-Paul de Mausole to see some sites painted by Van Gogh (entrance fee not included).
The afternoon will be dedicated to the discovery of two provencal vineyards. Drive to the village of Gigondas. Located at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail hill range, the vineyard covers an area of 12 km² : the wines produced belong to the Crus of the southern Côtes du Rhône. The Grenache noir expresses its full flavour in glimmering red wines with pronounced tannins, a robust body, and a solid propensity for ageing
Continuation to the following destination, the famous vineyard of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The ruins of the Pope's formal summer residence dominate the typical medieval village.
The 13 varieties of grapes combined with the various soils create a large palette of complex red wines and elegant white wines. Enjoy a wine-tasting in one of the numerous cellars of the village before going back to Avignon.
Free time for lunch (not included) during the day.
